Before you get started

A few things to remember when completing the Work Engagement Tool®:

  • Find a quiet space where you are unlikely to be interrupted.
  • Allow yourself up to 30 minutes to complete the tool in the one sitting.
  • There are no right or wrong answers, so complete all of the questions from your own perspective and insight.  Use your immediate thought when answering each of the statements.
  • If you do get interrupted and cannot complete the tool in the one sitting, don’t worry – your progress in the tool will be saved and you can exit by closing the web-browser. Next time you access the tool, your data will be retrieved and you will be taken to the point where you left off.
  • When you have completed the tool remember to click 'submit' – this is vital for your results to be compiled into your personalised Work Engagement Report.
  • Please do not hit this submit button twice. Be patient whilst the system automatically generates your report. It may take up to a few minutes. Do not close your web browser during this time.

There are three different components of the tool, and you will receive instructions for each at the start of the relevant section.

If you are self-employed and working for multiple clients, you might choose to focus on a particular work context when completing this tool.

In brief, the three different parts of the Work Engagement Tool® are:

  • Part One: Demographic Data, which asks you general questions for research purposes, such as your age, length of service in your current role, and industry classifications.
  • Part Two: Motivations – Importance and Satisfaction at Work requires you to rate a series of 52 different work aspects.  These will be reported in 7 different clusters.  For each work aspect, you will be asked to rate:
    1. How important that work aspect is for you (your motivating need) on a scale ranging from 1 (not at all important) through 4 (moderately important) to 7 (extremely important).
    2. How satisfied you are with that aspect of your current work (satisfaction of your motivating need) on a scale ranging from 1 (not at all satisfied) through 4 (moderately satisfied) to 7 (extremely satisfied).
  • Part Three: Engagement Factors looks at broader factors influencing engagement at work and overall commitment to work.  This part requires you to rate statements concerning 14 different factors according to how true they are for you in your current work on a scale ranging from 1 (not at all true) through 4 (moderately true) to 7 (extremely true).

"Not applicable" response options have been provided throughout the Work Engagement Tool®.  This is to allow for the occasional possibility that an individual cannot provide a meaningful response to an item.  However, it is expected that virtually all respondents will be able to provide responses to all items.  The "not applicable" response option should only be used if it is otherwise impossible to respond to an item, as reduction in the number of responses reduces the reliability of results.  In particular, the self-employed need to bear in mind throughout that they do work for organisations and do have persons to whom they are accountable, being their clients. Finally, please note that if a “not applicable” response option is chosen for a satisfaction rating, any response of 1–7 chosen for the accompanying importance rating will be disregarded (and vice versa).
